A regular highlight at Bremen is the Beluga Transport plane picking up Airbus parts at the airport. The Beluga also shows up in the timetable mentioned above with the identifier "BGA".
If you are spotting and not doing anything that is illeagal you will not be hasseled by the police.

Runway-Usage:
No specific runway priority. Check the weather forecast for the winds and plan accordingly. Frequent runway changes are rare.

Photo - Locations

A interactive map with the following spotting points on it can be found here, using maps.google.com.

Spot 1 - Observation Deck

  • General
The observation deck in Bremen is very popular and it's acces is for free. You can see everything that's going on at the airport, an you have insight to all gates and outside positions, except the loading of the Beluga's which is done at a parking spot covered by some buildings. A big plus, you don't have to deal with glass or high fences as at other observation decks.

  • How to get there
    Check the spotting map.
Top floor of the airport building, watch out for the signs inside the terminal.

  • What equipment do you need:
    No ladder required
    Lens approx. 70mm

  • When to use this spot
Light only shines on the taxiing planes in the morning. But until the early afternoon the planes are lit when they are turning into the gates. You can also try nightshots, but the light at the airport is yellow which results in some weird colors.

  • What kind of pictures can you take
Shot's of planes taxiing in and out.

Spot 2 - Taxiway

  • General
This spot is located near a turnaround center of the tram of Bremen. So watch out for trains once every 15min. From this spot you are very close to the planes taxiing to RWY27 or taxiing to the terminal after landing on RWY09.
Plus, the planes are rotating in front of you during take-off no matter which runway is in use.

  • How to get there
    Check the spotting map.
From the terminal follow the railway lines to the east. You can't miss the spot. Walking time approx. 10min. There are also a few parking spots that belong to a shop there, but don't park there long since you are not a customer!

  • What equipment do you need:
    Ladder required
Lens: for taxiing airplaes approx. 50mm, for planes taking-off or landing approx 100mm

  • When to use this spot
Since you are facing south you can only use the spot in summer shortly before sunset.

  • What kind of pictures can you take
Shots of taxiing planes aswell as landing and departing planes on RWY09/27

Spot 3 - Approach RWY27

  • General
The spot is on a foothpath that runs below the approach of RWY27. For take-offs from RWY09 the planes are too high already. Unfortunately there are a lot of trees and bushes that block the sight on the approach, so you hear the planes coming before you can see them.

  • How to get there
    Check the spotting map.
From the Terminal follow the signs in the direction of the highway to Hamburg. You will get on the "Neuenlander Straße". Before this street enters a tunnel turn right. Park you car somewhere along one of the smaller streets. Then go by foot to the "Alte Kuhweideweg" that starts at approx. the turnoff you took in front of the tunnel.

  • What equipment do you need:
    No ladder required
Lens: approx 100mm, you can vary your position there according to your equipment.

  • When to use this spot
    from 11:00 - 17:00

  • What kind of pictures can you take
Side shots of planes landing RWY27.

Spot 4 - Approach RWY27 (Parking Garage)

  • General
The spot is located on top of a parking garage in the approach of RWY27.

  • How to get there
    Check the spotting map.
See spot 3. After the turnoff before the tunnel take the street to the left and immediatelly to the right again. You can already see the garage then.

  • What equipment do you need:
    No ladder required
    Lens: approx 70mm.

  • When to use this spot
Similar to spot 2 you can only use the spot in the evening. But the light conditions are a bit better than in 2. because you can take frontal pictures of the planes earlier.

  • What kind of pictures can you take
Approach shots of planes landing on RWY27. Since you are almost directly underneath them no side shots are possible.

Spot 5 - Lineup RWY09 / Take-off RWY27

  • General
In my opinion the best spot around Bremen airport. The spot is located in a park south of the airport. The spot is at a small picknick area. You have a nice overview over the whole airport areal.

  • How to get there
    Check the spotting map.
From the terminal follow the signs to the Autobahn to Oldenburg. After you have entered the highway take the next exit and follow the street towards the south direction "Stuhr". You will cross under the approach of RWY09 and in the following right turn you can drive on a small road to the left and park you car there. Then go by foot further to the east, approx 5 min.

  • What equipment do you need:
Ladder: might be useful for the planes on the ground, for planes approaching RWY09 and departing planes on RWY27 not nescessary.
    Lens: approx 100mm

  • When to use this spot
    11:00 - 17:00

  • What kind of pictures can you take
You can see planes climbing out of RWY27, and after landing on RWY27 (small planes will probably not pass by since they are using an earlier turnoff). You can also see planes landing on RWY09 and lining up on RWY09.
